What are different Roof styles that can be installed in a Toronto home
This is what we call a mono slope or skillion roof. So just basically a flat sloped roof Sometimes it’s also called a lean-to especially if it’s off the side of an existing building. So there’s a – slope or a skillion Roof and Some other variations on that But basically this is what they call a trough roof or a butterfly.
It’s two – mono sloped roofs meeting in the middle the box gutter box which is very fashionable in Toronto nowadays seem to be what lots of architects designing this style of Roof installation in Toronto. Butterfly staying with the flat type roofs This is what they call a Sawtooth. you can have windows in there which lets a lot of light into the building That very simple flat roof, but again you can end up with a gutter in near a box gutter Which can be a bit of a pain,
Similar to the Sawtooth but with the this roof going back the other way Clerestory, again really good for letting in light use the lot nowadays in the environmentally designed homes because you can let light in to heat up a mass a thermal mass within the house.
So yeah, Clerestory used a far bit Nowadays as well. So then we go away from our flat type roofs into our pitched roofs and the first one being a gable.
So this is a flush gable because the gables flush with the outside of the wall alright, so it’s just the flat gable is the flat triangular end on the building and then we also can have a Box gable where the gable sticks out and sits out with the end of the roof.
We also have what they call an A-frame which is basically a gable roof, but the roof extends all the way to the ground Used a lot in Alpine areas where they have snow because of the steep roof will help the snow to run off.
Not to fall off A frame And then we get into our traditional common type roofs with the hip. This one just got the four hips running up from the corner the hip always bisects the corner on plan and A little bit of a variation on the hip is if you had a perfectly square building. You would end up with the pyramid which is just the four hips Coming to a point in the middle of the roof .
Then we have our hip and valley so you don’t see this too often because very rarely that the two wings of the building are the same width which would give us a perfectly the roof the same size the hip and Valley.
What we see more commonly is this situation where we have one wing of the building slightly narrower than the other one and that gives us what we call a broken hip and valley. Being the broken hip this obviously, it’s not running full length down to the plate so that’s our broken hip and our valley in there. So then we get on to some combinations if you like of our gable and our hip roof, so this is a dutch gable You can see basically it’s a hip roof with them very small.
This is referred to as a gablet or gable it in the top here so that’s a dutch gable which basically got half the height of the roof is the gable end and half the height of the roof is the hip end. And this is the one they call that The Mansard I’m about to show you they call that a Gambrel So going the other way around we have a Jerkhead roof.
The Jerkhead Roof has a flat end like our gable But the very top of it. It’s just been clipped off to look like a hip end. You may say might think you’ve never seen those around but they you know if you have a look start having a look. You’ll see them quite often.
We then have what I call a Bellcast or it basically has two different pitches in the roof.
Now the difference between the Bellcast and the station. The station is quite often used with Verandas, so this would be the roof over the Veranda Whereas the Bellcast the actual roof is still over the main Closed in part of the building.
We have the Deck which obviously has a deck on top of viewing platform Not seen too often, But it basically has two pitches again So it starts out fairly flat and then get steeper on the sides as it comes down and again also used a lot in two-story Renovations so you can actually build a room into the ceiling into the roof space The Monitor which is pretty obvious.
Then we have our Tutor basically a Tutor roof is a 45-degree angle roof. This is a gable so this pitch is 45 degrees and Whenever we have steep pitch roofs. You’re probably going to see Dormer Windows If you let light into the roof space because they’re probably being a room with that much room in the roof you’ll probably have a bedroom or something in there as well.
So we have Dormer Windows let the light into that Then we get into a couple of really weird ones.Helm which is again a bit of a weird combination of the gable and a hip and be nice way to finish off a tower or something and One which is becoming more popular nowadays with the shade sail.
Shade sail type setup is the Hyperbolic Paraboloid Roof So basically it’s curved in all directions. So there’s big curved in here the curves back up that way which obviously forces a curve into there. That’s a bit of a weird shape, but think about stuff They’re doing with shade sails and that sort of thing let’s see a Hyperbolic Paraboloid roof. So that’s all the roofs now You probably rarely see one of these by themselves lots of times even with a broken hip and valley they’ll have our gable or a Dutch gable stuck on one end.
They’re all going to be used in combination To create the the Toronto roof on the particular house that you’re building.
